Parents undoubtedly have the most difficult job in the world, as they face the demands of a daily job to pay the bills along with the ever changing needs of their growing children. When a child or children begin to STRUGGLE with their emotions and their distress, this begins a journey for parenst that can seem daunting. Questions come about instantly, " How do I handle this? What exactly does my child need for help?" I have outlined the levels of care available in Massachussetts at this time. Please note PHP programs are for children age 13 and up.
1) Outpatient therapy- depending on the age of the vhild this may include play therapy, older children do well with CBT, Grounding strategies or even DBT depending on the individual. These can be either in person or virtual, and depends on the child's ability to engage. Some children/adolescents do not do well with virtual sessions due to issues with Previous diagnosis of ADHD etc.
2) PHP- Partial Hospitalization Program- Is a short term intensive treatment program to help tweens an adolescents with mental health challenges. These programd can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks with 2 weeks being the average. The patient comes to the program during the day and then returns home. PHP involves group therapy, individual therapy and some medications management as needed.
3) CBAT- this is an acronym for Community Based Acute Treatment facility. It is a facility that will admit children to STAY with them for a limited time and is done on a voluntary basis as these units are not locked. The focus here is on the patient and the family making changes that will improve safety in the home and the community for those dealing with behavioral difficulties. Sometimes children and adolescents alike are referred to these programs following an inpatient admission.
3) INPATIENT- A Specialized mental health unit where a child stays at the facility to receive intensive care for severe mental health issues. The goal of inpatient is to STABILIZE a child's condition using age appropriate treatment.
